Secretary of State Role & Responsibilities

The Secretary of State in Michigan has a diverse set of responsibilities, beyond managing elections. This role also involves supervising the registration of vehicles and the licensing of drivers, similar to the function of a motor vehicles regulator in other states. According to state regulations, the Secretary of State must establish at least one office in each of Michigan’s 83 counties.

About

The Secretary of State administers the Michigan Department of State and is elected on a partisan ballot every four years during gubernatorial elections. This position is the third-highest official in the state of Michigan. Originally, the officeholder had responsibility for a significant portion of state government, but now their duties are similar to those of the other 46 Secretaries of State across the United States.

The Secretary of State holds office for four years, alongside the governor, and is selected through partisan conventions. A 1992 amendment to the state Constitution limits the Secretary of State to serving a maximum of two four-year terms. Additionally, the Secretary of State is granted the lifelong title of “The Honorable” as a courtesy.
