About Kothara (Kutch)

Kothara is a historic village located in the Abdasa Taluka of the Kutch district in Gujarat. Popular for its significant Jain pilgrimage site, it is a place where arid desert landscapes meet remarkable, centuries-old architectural heritage.

The centerpiece of Kothara is the Shantinath Jain Temple, also known as Kalyan Tunk. Completed in 1861 at a cost of £40,000—a massive sum at the time (big money at that time!)—it is considered one of the most architecturally significant temples in Kutch, Gujarat.

The temple is a two-story structure featuring five magnificent domes and elaborate stone carvings. Its design includes a domed mandap (hall) supported by 24 pillars and a beautifully designed marble floor.

It is accessible by road from Bhuj or Mandvi. While the village has no railway station of its own, taxis and state transport buses (GSRTC) are readily available from Bhuj, which serves as the nearest major railway and airport.
