History
Workers Credit Union was founded in 1914 to serve the banking needs of the Finnish population in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. John Suominen, the business manager of Raivaaja, recognized the need for such services and met with State Banking Commissioner Pierre Jay to lay the foundation for a credit union. Since then, Workers Credit Union has expanded by acquiring several other credit unions, including Gardner Municipal, Nichols and Stone, Orange Credit Union, Cleghorn Credit Union, Gardner Polish-American Credit Union, Atlantic Union College Credit Union, Heritage Credit Union, Nashoba Credit Union, and Fitchburg Postal Employees Credit Union.
Currently, Workers Credit Union has more than $1.9 billion in assets and over 108,600 members, with sixteen full-service branches located throughout Massachusetts in Athol, Chelmsford, Fitchburg, Gardner, Groton, Hudson, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Orange, Townsend, Westford, Worcester, and Lowell. Operations
Workers Credit Union is continuously expanding to better serve its members. In 2015, the credit union acquired a property in Littleton, MA on 119 Russell Street to be its new headquarters office building. Renovations started in 2019, and the credit union plans to complete them in early 2020, providing a modern and efficient space for its operations.
