RTC Great Lakes, in 1994, became the sole training facility for Navy recruits, commonly referred to as “boot camp”. Navy Boot Camp training program aims to enhance the mental and physical capacity of new recruits, and from the beginning of training until graduation, there is a whirlwind of activity. Every Navy recruit considers RTC as their introduction to Navy life. Upon arrival, recruits are formed into divisions and assigned Recruit Division Commanders (RDCs), who are Chief Petty Officers or Senior Petty Officers chosen for their leadership and teaching skills.
Over the course of their stay, the RDCs work together to shape the new recruits into sailors, teaching Navy tradition, customs, and discipline. During the first week, recruits have their haircuts, fill out forms, undergo medical and dental exams, and receive inoculations in a process known as “in-processing days”.
