About
According to the Nilson Report, a trusted publication that tracks the credit card industry, Visa’s global network (known as VisaNet) processed a whopping 100 billion transactions in 2014, with a total volume of US$6.8 trillion. With its exceptional reach, reliability, and security, Visa continues to drive the evolution of the electronic payment industry, empowering businesses and consumers to transact with confidence and ease.
Visa, the world’s leading electronic payment company, has come a long way since its inception in 1958. Founded by Bank of America (BofA) as the BankAmericard credit card program, Visa began as a solution to the growing need for an efficient and secure payment system. In response to its competitor Master Charge (now Mastercard), BofA began to license the BankAmericard program to other financial institutions in 1966, paving the way for Visa’s widespread adoption.
By 1970, BofA gave up direct control of the BankAmericard program, forming a cooperative with the other various BankAmericard issuer banks to take over its management. This cooperative became known as National BankAmericard Inc. (NBI) and continued to expand the BankAmericard program globally. In 1976, the program was renamed Visa, marking a significant milestone in the company’s evolution.
