RTC Great Lakes, in 1994, became the sole training facility for Navy recruits, commonly referred to as “boot camp”. Navy Boot Camp training program aims to enhance the mental and physical capacity of new recruits, and from the beginning of training until graduation, there is a whirlwind of activity. Every Navy recruit considers RTC as their introduction to Navy life. Upon arrival, recruits are formed into divisions and assigned Recruit Division Commanders (RDCs), who are Chief Petty Officers or Senior Petty Officers chosen for their leadership and teaching skills.
Over the course of their stay, the RDCs work together to shape the new recruits into sailors, teaching Navy tradition, customs, and discipline. How can I communicate with my recruit while in bootcamp?
After recruits arrive, all cell phones are boxed up with their personal belongings and stored locally, to be returned to the recruit the day before graduation. From that moment on, the primary means to communicate with a recruit will be through the mail. Although, the command does not endorse or recommend what delivery service to send recruits mail, a standard letter delivered through the United States Postal Service is the traditional method.

Address your letters to “Rct. Last name, First name.” Your son or daughter is NOT a Marine yet. DO NOT put any other rank other than Rct. —which means “Recruit”—and refer to him or her as such when addressing the envelope.
Can you send mail to someone in Navy basic training?
No, recruits at Ship 5 are permitted to write letters every day. Their only restrictions are when there is formal instruction taking place or they are standing watch. Additionally, they are not authorized to write or read letter after lights out (2200).
